“My name is Allison, I’m 23 and am a full-time junior at UC Davis where my declared major is East Asian studies with an emphasis on Japan. Although my biggest passion in life is Japanese language and culture, I also really enjoy traveling, spending time with family and friends, and also pursuing other interests – such as the piano and singing! For most of my life I’ve been involved in music in some form or another, whether it was piano or flute lessons, school choirs, or voice lessons. I still consider myself a complete novice in both singing and piano, but I enjoy the challenge of mastering more and more complex music while having fun at the same time. It’s a form of stress relief for me – essential within my busy student life-style! I also occasionally manage to blend my passion for Japan and music together by searching for music created by Japanese artists — I think most people would be surprised by the wealth of extremely varied musical compositions that have come from Japan in recent years!
In the future, I hope to live in Japan for a while and teach children English and beginning-level music part-time while earning my M.A. at a Japanese university. Nevertheless I’m sure I’ll always either be in a choir or taking music lessons, since I never plan on being without music in my life!”
